Zanzibar Attractions

Zanzibar is an exotic paradise, renowned as the “Spice Island” for good reason. The island’s capital, Zanzibar Town, is rich with historic buildings, each with its own story. At the heart of the island is Stone Town, where time seems to have stood still. Scattered throughout Zanzibar are intriguing ruins from its tumultuous past. From July to December, the air is infused with the fragrant scent of clove during the harvest season. Along the east coast, you’ll find endless beautiful beaches and inviting aquamarine waters.

Prison/Changuu Island

This island, approximately half a mile long and one-eighth of a mile wide, was once owned by an Arab and used as a private detention place for rebellious slaves. General Mathews later purchased it, and the Gaul, built in 1893, was intended as a central prison for Zanzibar but was never used for that purpose. Instead, it served as Zanzibar’s infectious disease hospital. Today, the island is home to many large tortoises, some over 3 feet in diameter. The shore facing the town offers excellent bathing and is a popular spot for picnic parties.

Spice Island

The Spice Island of Zanzibar lies off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Once the commercial hub of East Africa and the last place to abolish the slave trade, Zanzibar now blends ancient Islamic ruins and grand Arabic houses with miles of white sandy beaches and picturesque coves. The warm, clear blue waters offer fantastic snorkeling, diving, and deep-sea fishing, along with various water sports and delectable fresh fish. Additionally, visiting the spice plantations—where you can see cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and cardamom—or haggling for carvings in the Central Market adds to the island’s charm.

Mnemba Island

Mnemba Island is located just 15 minutes by boat from Zanzibar’s northeast coast. It is surrounded by a lagoon and boasts over 10 miles of reefs teeming with vibrant fish and colorful corals.

Mnarani Beach

Mnarani, located at the northern tip of Zanzibar Island in the heart of Nungwi village, means “lighthouse” in Swahili. Here, on the eastern ridge of the village, you’ll find Zanzibar’s oldest lighthouse, built in 1886 and still in operation today.

Stone Town

Though its name may not sound particularly romantic, Stone Town is Zanzibar’s historic and cultural heart, largely unchanged over the past 200 years. This area is characterized by winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques, and grand Arab houses, where original owners competed in extravagance. This rivalry is especially evident in the more than 500 unique brass-studded, carved wooden doors that adorn the buildings. You can easily spend hours, or even days, exploring the captivating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.

Pemba Island

Pemba, historically known as El Huthera or “the Green” by Arab sailors due to its dense vegetation, is a remote and relatively unknown island located just 30 minutes north of Zanzibar by light aircraft. Unlike Zanzibar, which has seen a rise in popularity, Pemba remains less frequented by foreign holidaymakers, preserving its tranquil and secluded charm.

Chumbe Island

The lighthouse on this island, located eight miles from Zanzibar and opposite Chukwani, was established in 1990 and features an automatic light. Nearby, there’s a mosque, and ships heading to Dar-es-Salaam pass close by on the port side.

The island has been developed into a Nature Reserve and is home to one of the world’s most spectacular coral gardens, known as the Chumbe Reef Sanctuary. It boasts seven eco-bungalows, each with en-suite facilities and solar-powered halogen lights. These bungalows blend seamlessly with the surrounding nature, nestled between the beach and the forest.
